24 Inspiring Bible Verses on Love

What does the Bible say on the topic of love? How should we love God? How should we show real love to others?

The Bible has much to say about love. As I studied these verses, I noticed a 5 principles are repeated in God’s Word about love.

First, according to the New Testament the new commandment is to love God first. Anytime we put someone or something before God we are sinning. God should be our first love.

Second, the best way to show the love of Christ to others is by treating them with the same respect we would show ourselves. Don’t forget to show love to your enemies.

Third, love covers sins and mistakes. In John 3:16, God loved us and sent Jesus so we could be forgiven. I Peter 4:8 love forgives wrongs done to us.

Fourth, love is enduring. It’s not a feeling we change from hour to hour or day to day.

Fifth, love is a choice. Love makes sacrifices for the one loved.

I Corinthians 13:4-7 What is love?

Love is patient and is kind. Love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, ⁵ doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; ⁶ doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; ⁷ bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.

I John 4:18 No fear in love

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love.

I John 4:13 God is love

We know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.

Galatians 5:22-23 Fruit of the Spirit

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Mark 12:30-31 The Greatest Commandment

 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. ³¹  The second is like this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.

Ephesians 4:2-3 Love brings a bond of peace

With all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Romans 8:38-39 Nothing can separate us from the love of God

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, ³⁹ Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Jeremiah 31:3 Loved with an everlasting love

I John 5:3 – How do we love God?

For this is loving God, that we keep his commandments. His commandments are not grievous.
