True Source of Wisdom – Proverbs 1:7

Proverbs 1:7

We live in a world overwhelmed with information and knowledge. You can find information about just about anything using a simple internet search.

You probably have a smartphone (which a mini computer right in your hand), you probably have a TV that shares news and information, and you probably also have one or more computers in your home. All these devices provide us with an abundance of information and knowledge.

But even with so much information around us, we might still lack wisdom. If we rely on man and the opinions of men we can have overwhelming amounts of knowledge, but we still lack wisdom.

So where does wisdom come from?

The Bible says the fear of Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge, but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 1:7 (WEB)

In this verse, Yahweh is God’s proper name, many times you will see it written as LORD (all caps) in the text. This name is used in the Bible when referencing God’s relationship with his people. In this verse, God is a father providing wisdom to his children.

Even with all the books, articles, podcasts, websites and more, we cannot have true wisdom without if we don’t fear God and allow Biblical teaching and values to shape our thinking. As you make choices in life, you will make them because you fear God or you fear man.

In Luke 12:4-5, Jesus also warned us not to fear man, but to fear God.

“I tell you, my friends, don’t be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.  But I will warn you whom you should fear. Fear him who after he has killed, has power to cast into Gehenna*. Yes, I tell you, fear him.” (*Gehenna, or hell).

Luke 12:4-5 (WEB)

As we start a new year, we don’t know the future. I pray you have an optimistic and hopeful vision for this year. I encourage you don’t let your heart be gripped with the fear of man. Take the information and knowledge you receive and apply your faith, start with the fear of the LORD and you will find wisdom for each day.
