Do you know how long a thousands generations is?
In the Bible a generation was about 40 years. A thousand generations would be about 40,000 years. Today’s verse, Deuteronomy 7:9 promises that God will be faithful for a thousand generations.
Consider, we are presently only about 125 generations from Adam. From the Bible’s genealogies, we know there were 76 generations from Adam to Jesus. If we apply the same 40 years for a generation (although in modern times a generation is usually about 25 years), there are 50 generations from Jesus to now.
Know therefore that Yahweh your God himself is God, the faithful God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness to a thousand generations with those who love him and keep his commandments,
Deuteronomy 7:9
While we can mathematically calculate how long a 1,000 generations would be, I believe this verse means that God will be faithful and bless those who love Him and keep his commandments forever.
And, the context of verse seems to indicate 1,000 generations means forever. Think about God’s faithfulness. He made a promise to Adam, Noah, Abraham and David that he continues to uphold for us today. Because God is faithful we can trust him with all are cares, worry and anxiety.
Additionally, in Psalm 105:8, it says,
He has remembered his covenant forever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations,
God keeps his promises to those who are faithful to him. And how wonderful it is to know He remembers his word and will be faithful to us, forever.
