Ephesians 5:1 Be an imitator

Ephesians 5:1 Imitators of God

When you were a kid, you probably played that game (or prank) on your friends when you would say or do everything they did. You might have called it the copycat game. Usually, it didn’t take long for your friends to get annoyed with you.

Today, we are going to talk about imitation in a good way.

Be therefore imitators of God, as beloved children.

Ephesians 5:1

How do we become imitators of God? Galatians 5 gives us the answer. In verse 2, Paul tells us to walk in the light of God.

We can walk in light and show God’s love to others by imitating God. By living a life that’s different from what the world considers normal.

In Ephesians 5:3-5, Paul describes the things we should avoid including immorality, uncleanness, covetousness, foolish and dirty talking. Paul warns us not to be involved in these activities. These are actions of the darkness.

But then he says in verses 8-10 that we should walk in the light proving what is pleasing to the Lord. Follow God’s ways and imitate them in your life so others will see your actions and want to imitate God, too.

Walking in the light means to live a pure life through our actions and what we say. As we become more like Christ in our actions, we will walk in the light.

There is also a warning here, be careful and do not let others deceive you with empty words. The world will try to twist the Bible to fit their desires. Do not let this happen to you. Stay in the light.

Our Pastor recently spoke about this verse. He said, don’t think of the Christian life as a long list of things you shouldn’t be doing, but instead be positive and ask yourself what should I be doing.

Ask yourself today, in all I do, how can I imitate Christ?
